We wrote this article specifically for those of you who have been wondering how to start barfing for a while, but keep putting off barfing for a number of reasons. With our guide, you can easily start barfing the next day!

You don't need a college degree to BARF!

How much does a dog eat on BARF?
For an adult dog with normal activity, the daily dose should weigh roughly
2-3% of the total body weight . A 10-kilogram breed will receive a dose of around 200-300 g per barf, a 30-kilogram dog will eat up to three times more. But remember that every dog is different and the food should be adapted to it .

When determining the feed dose, do not forget to take the dog's activity into account. Dogs in exercise and dog athletes eat much more (because they move more and need to supply more energy from food) than such a spayed older female.

But on BARF, you can very quickly adjust the entire feed dose so that your dog gets exactly what he needs . If you see that he is too thin, you add a little to him, if, on the other hand, he is a little overweight, you simply reduce the total feed ration. The great thing about barfing is that you can very easily adjust your overall food intake to exactly what you need.

So what does a dog eat at BARF?

The feed ration for BARF consists of:

  • Raw meat and offal (The most important source of protein - necessary for the growth and proper functioning of the whole organism.)
  • Meaty bones (Always raw and covered with meat, never give your dog boiled or roasted bones. If for some reason you don't want to give whole bones, buy a meat mixture that also contains ground bones.)
  • Vegetables and fruits (A wide variety of salads, root vegetables, but also zucchini, pumpkin. Always grate or cut vegetables to make them easier to digest. Most dogs also accept them much better.)
  • Side dish (If your dog needs a little extra, add rice, pasta, couscous or bulgur to his barf.)
  • Oils for dogs . Don't ever forget these, because feed meat does not contain enough fat. Why do we rely on them so much? Since fats form the energy base for every dog, some vitamins are dissolved in them, and the dog's body uses them to create hormones necessary for the proper functioning of the whole body.
  • Food supplements for dogs that ensure a balanced feed dose. So that you don't have to make a difficult choice, we have put together an Everyday balancer , in which you will find all the vitamins and other nutrients that your dog needs for a happy life.

Everyday balancer, minerals and vitamins for dogs

Canis Lab TIP: Don't want to grate so many vegetables by hand every day? Try our Vegáč dried vegetables for dogs , which you cover with hot water, wait until it swells and you can serve it.

Nowadays, you can feed your dog not only chicken, but also duck, pork, beef and a variety of fish (salmon, trout, perch or even carp). In stores or e-shops with barf, you can get chunks of meat as well as minced meat - mix vegetables or accessories that your dog does not want to eat into the minced meat. From meaty bones, serve softer chicken necks or wings first. Larger dogs can also handle duck necks or turkey necks. It is better to always cut cut meat into the smallest possible pieces.

Canis Lab TIP: A few times a week and a bite and mechanical cleaning of the teeth, you can use larger bones, for example pork shoulder. (Always keep the dog under supervision so that you can intervene at any time, the large bones are really only for a bite, the dog should not eat them.)

How often to feed on BARF?

It has worked for us to divide the feed ration into breakfast and dinner. Raw meat is digested by the stomach faster than pellets, so give the barfing dose divided in half in the morning and in the evening. And if it seems to you that the dog hardly drinks at the barf, don't worry, it's completely normal. Unlike pellets, raw food contains a lot of water, so the dog does not need to drink as much. But it certainly does not mean that you will take away his bowl of fresh water at BARF!

Canis Lab TIP: We've written down 7 reasons why we think barfing is great . You can find them in the article What is Barf or feeding a dog with meat .

Most dog owners are deterred from BARF by the big fear that the diet on BARF does not cover all the nutrients, minerals and vitamins that the dog needs to live. In the case of kibble, we leave this concern to the manufacturer, who we expect to put everything the dog needs in the bag (mind you, even kibble may not contain all the substances in the optimal amount).

In addition to Vegáč and Everyday Balancer, we have 2 more unique food supplements for BARF , which will ensure that you give your dog everything he needs:

  • Immunovital it will support your partner's health even in the most demanding period - you will find in it not only Colostrum and Betaglucan, but also important vitamin C. You will strengthen the natural defenses of the dog's organism.
  • Poop Good turns loose digestion and tames even dog farts. You can add it regularly to the feed, but it will also serve you well at home as a first aid for diarrhea in dogs.
